What is Balanced Scorecard?

Balanced Scorecard (BSC) terminology coined by Art Schneiderman and later popularized as a concept by Kaplan and Norton through their famous book “The Balance Scorecard”. We can describe the Balanced Scorecard as a carefully selected set of measures derived from an organization’s strategy. These set of measures form 4 legs to achieve balance and satisfy all the stakeholders. The 4 legs are Financial, Customer, Internal Business Process, Learning and Growth.

What is Policy Deployment Or Hoshin Kanri?

Policy Deployment is a systematic method of focusing an organization on critical breakthrough areas by planning, implementing and reviewing improvement activities. Policy deployment has its origin in Japan where it is known as Hoshin Kanri. The word hoshin means “shining metal” or magnet. The work Kanri means “management”. Hence Hoshin Kanri, literally means Management of Direction or Management For Objectives.

Why the Combination of Balanced Scorecard and Policy Deployment is a powerful concept?

While Balanced Scorecard helps in Translating Vision and Strategies into meaningful performance measures, Policy deployment helps in effective deployment of the measures at all levels using a structured and disciplined approach. Together they help in execution of strategy with accountability and conviction.
